Which states skip wage income tax?
In our calculator model, these states set state income tax to $0 on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Always confirm current law for your income types — some states tax interest/dividends differently, and rules can change.
What you still pay
Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare still apply. Living costs, property taxes, and sales taxes can offset the headline benefit of “no state income tax,” so compare total cost of living — not only the paycheck line.
Fair offer comparison
When comparing a California offer to a Texas offer, keep salary, filing status, and pay frequency identical in both calculators. Then adjust for rent, commute, and benefits. A higher Texas net can still lose to California if housing costs dominate.

Frequently asked questions
Is New Hampshire really no income tax?
New Hampshire does not tax wages like a traditional state income tax in our model; other income types may have different treatment. Verify for your situation.
Does Washington tax anything else?
Washington has other tax structures (including business and some capital-related rules). Wage income tax in our model is $0.
Should I move only for tax?
Usually no. Total compensation, career growth, and living costs matter more than one tax line.
Are these official?
No — planning estimates only.
